Squirrel 1887

The size of the sampler is 15 inches tall and 13 inches wide. The sampler was stitched with red cotton thread.

This is a fun sampler because of the motifs it features. There are several Bristol samplers including the large Squirrel motif you see on this sampler. The other samplers shown on this website that include the same squirrel motif are MH Smith and Elizabeth Mars. The squirrel motif has been seen stitched in less than 5 samplers that have surfaced to date.

The EE Squirrel sampler has all of the classic elements for a later Bristol sampler. Our unknown stitcher may not have been a fan of alphabets. She obviously liked to stitch border bands and motifs. The wreaths, the houses, and the elephant can all be seen on samplers stitched during this time period.
