The original sampler size is: 8.6 inches wide x 13.25 inches high.
There are only a few Bristol samplers that have surfaced so far that include the large image of the same squirrel seen in this sampler. This sampler features Mr. Squirrel and many other familiar motifs and alphabets found in earlier Bristol samplers. The other squirrel samplers pictured on this website are: MH Smith 1900, Elizabeth Mars 1888, and Squirrel 1887. No original pattern has been found for this exact squirrel but there was likely one being shared by sampler stitchers during the time these samplers were worked.
The two most familiar motifs in this sampler associated with Bristol samplers are the Bible and the elephant. The size of the sampler is unusual, although there are other samplers like Celia Bell 1902 and Florriette Hills 1903 who also have this narrow and long format.
We don't know who stitched the sampler. There are several names that were stitched: Nellie, Bella, Kate, and Grace. The initials GT were also stitched on the sampler.
This sampler is in a private collection. The image shown on this website is used with permission.
This sampler has been charted for stitchers under the name Grace 1893. You can purchase a chart from a needlework store or directly from European Reproduction Samplers.
