Mary Hillier 1867

Bristol samplers can often be grouped together by their style. Mary Hillier 1867, Esther Ann Hague 1865, Emma Sandford 1867, and Augusta all stitched their samplers in the same time period. It is likely that these girls lived in the same orphan house and stitched their samplers together. Bristol samplers share alphabets, motifs, and formats, but no two are exactly the same.

Mary was a good stitcher. Her stitching is very neat and tidy. Her sampler includes many of the alphabets and motifs that we see in other early traditional red samplers.

The original sampler is in a private collection. All images and information have been shared on this website with permission of the owner.
